So here's what we think...
Whether you’re in the market for a shared web hosting account or your looking at moving your enterprise class hosting account elsewhere, 1&1 have a selection of services which you can utilize. 1&1’s product offering certainly packs a punch in both the performance, and their dedication to keeping pricing low, makes them an ideal option for many webmasters.
One thing that we at WebHostingToolBox really admire about 1&1 is their multi-homed approach, meaning that your website is physically hosted on two separate servers in different geographic areas, ensuring that no outages could affect the performance of your website.
Uptime & Reliability:
1&1 has both the budget and customer base to have a high performance and extremely reliable hosting network. They use cutting edge server infrastructure, make daily backups and protect your files without you even having to think about it. They also even offer “dual hosting” which allows your website to be hosted in two geographically disperse locations, providing you with better performance for your clients and in case of location failure.
While 1&1 doesn’t mention anything on their website about their uptime, their uptime is typically pegged at 99.999%, which is by far higher than most typical web hosting providers.
Features:
1&1 doesn’t need to impress their clients with “unlimited” features. Instead they reserve “unlimited” features for their business web hosting clients. You’ll find rather 1&1 find them providing you with dual-location hosting, high quality security features, and management tools. However, they will sweeten up the deal a little bit for you, they will give you some social marketing credits for starting promo campaigns for your projects.
Support:
1&1s customer service isn’t their forte. They seem to use outsourced support (where their support is based out of is currently unknown). While they aren’t known for being outstanding, you can get your problems resolved in a relatively timely manner. In some cases, it can be said that they lack live chat for their support, but they do provide 24/7 phone and email support, a community forum, and an extensive FAQ section.
- 24/7 Phone & Email Support
- Community Forum
- Extensive KB (FAQ)
- No Live Chat
- Long ticket response times
User Friendly:
While 1&1 follows the trends that happen in the market place, they do so from a position of uniqueness. Everything that they offer on their web hosting service is custom, meaning that its scaled to fit your needs rather than something that’s available as an industry standard.
1&1 will provide you with a proprietary but very easy to use control panel (called 1&1 Control), a 1&1 Website Builder (very easy to use), and many other unique features. So rest assured, you’ll have the best in class user experience when you get setup with this web hosting provider.

So what do other Webmasters think?
Don't use 1&1 would be my recommendation; I fell fowl of their auto renewal system and that involved their debt collection team. They were trying to use heavy handed tactics on me! They eventually got my account cleared, but not something I would like to be applied to others!
I would say that they are a well rounded and quite solid company. Any customer service requests that I make end up getting solved... maybe not instantly, but they do get solved. Im sorta glad with their service even though that everyone else wants to kick and knock it around a bit. I think they are worth the while.
I hate it. It's slow, the interface sucks and difficult to use. The site takes longer to refresh than it would on my computer at home. I don't know what's going on with them... endless problems. In fact, I'm planning on moving my website right now.
When I signed up, my website was incorrectly routed, so when the page loaded, it couldn't load the content. I was like wtf? Then after that, the package creation script must have messed up... and contacted support... two days passssssss andddddd now finally it gets resolved after 100 emails. Not super sure who is providing the better support me or them. You can't work with things like this; its impossible.
1&1 when it comes to Windows hosting is rock solid. I've never had an issue where their web server was unavailable or there was a need to get in contact with their support. It just always worked like it should out of the box and that was it. Just worked, nothing else. In fact, I can say that the service speed up in the recent months, my website seems to load snappier.
1&1 = bullshit. I recently became an admin of a couple of websites that are connected to this crappy provider. The support replies are useless and deficient; the service is decent, hard to admin, but decent. The email service is really great though; but apart from that blah. So its a mixed bag in a sense, they are cumbersome and complex, but they have excellent performance. Which is more important to you... you have to decide.
Having an account with 1&1 sometimes can be quite an annoying and problematic experience. However, there are times that the company shines; and others that is a huge pitfall. I'm honestly not sure what to mark them as, a good, bad, or mediocre.
Poor customer service, I had a problem even trying to get signed up; they like were literally unhelpful in getting setup. I signed up, then my account failed to be created, so I left it there. Next day, I contacted the support group and they said you should have received a refund. I didn't; so I contacted their support again... finally did though. Terrible support.
Don't be fooled by negative reviews; the people that have written them must be insane on inept or maybe even both! Anyways, so they are actually pretty decent, they don't have a lot of problems, but they do have some. They are always trying to fix them though and that's what counts in my book. I love 1&1, yes, their support is a bit thick sometimes, but apart from that... its not so bad.
Sometimes it really seems like these guys have no idea about what they are doing or even speaking about. Its like speaking with a crazy person, they just don't make any sense. Well, the same concept applies for 1&1; they don't know what they are doing. If your hosting doesn't crash and you won't need tech support EVER then they are an excellent web hosting provider... because they are as solid as a rock.
1&1 is amazing, they have a stable network, uptime is fantastic and the service is really rock solid. Never had any problems with the site loading nor have I had any issues with downtime or internal error messages.
I've been a customer of 1and1 for years, most of the time, I've had nothing but a positive support response... while I normally don't need customer service, as I know what Im doing... I needed them this one time.
