So here's what we think...
Whether you’re in the market for a shared web hosting account or your looking at moving your enterprise class hosting account elsewhere, 1&1 have a selection of services which you can utilize. 1&1’s product offering certainly packs a punch in both the performance, and their dedication to keeping pricing low, makes them an ideal option for many webmasters.
One thing that we at WebHostingToolBox really admire about 1&1 is their multi-homed approach, meaning that your website is physically hosted on two separate servers in different geographic areas, ensuring that no outages could affect the performance of your website.
Uptime & Reliability:
1&1 has both the budget and customer base to have a high performance and extremely reliable hosting network. They use cutting edge server infrastructure, make daily backups and protect your files without you even having to think about it. They also even offer “dual hosting” which allows your website to be hosted in two geographically disperse locations, providing you with better performance for your clients and in case of location failure.
While 1&1 doesn’t mention anything on their website about their uptime, their uptime is typically pegged at 99.999%, which is by far higher than most typical web hosting providers.
Features:
1&1 doesn’t need to impress their clients with “unlimited” features. Instead they reserve “unlimited” features for their business web hosting clients. You’ll find rather 1&1 find them providing you with dual-location hosting, high quality security features, and management tools. However, they will sweeten up the deal a little bit for you, they will give you some social marketing credits for starting promo campaigns for your projects.
Support:
1&1s customer service isn’t their forte. They seem to use outsourced support (where their support is based out of is currently unknown). While they aren’t known for being outstanding, you can get your problems resolved in a relatively timely manner. In some cases, it can be said that they lack live chat for their support, but they do provide 24/7 phone and email support, a community forum, and an extensive FAQ section.
- 24/7 Phone & Email Support
- Community Forum
- Extensive KB (FAQ)
- No Live Chat
- Long ticket response times
User Friendly:
While 1&1 follows the trends that happen in the market place, they do so from a position of uniqueness. Everything that they offer on their web hosting service is custom, meaning that its scaled to fit your needs rather than something that’s available as an industry standard.
1&1 will provide you with a proprietary but very easy to use control panel (called 1&1 Control), a 1&1 Website Builder (very easy to use), and many other unique features. So rest assured, you’ll have the best in class user experience when you get setup with this web hosting provider.
Summary:
1&1 has a steady performance and reliability rating, they do offer a money back guarantee and the do offer services that allows your business to grow within 1&1. While their customer service is poor, they do make up for it with their extensive support resources and community forum.

So what do other Webmasters think?
We purchased a small VPS with 1&1 and have kept it for about two years. We are very happy to actually leave this web hosting provider due to the lack of features and functionality. For example, if we want to restart the VPS, there is no way of doing that. You basically have to call them to reboot it. Like really basic, really annoying.
It seems like 1and1 is built on charging people for stuff they don't provide. You know? Its weird, but it seems true. They put my account into collections, yet I didn't do anything and I paid my invoice 24 hours late. So I don't really know what to think about this company? between their support... and their bloody inability to provide it and bad customer service... I'd think twice before moving to them!
Tip: If your looking at cancelling; I would suggest that you that you put it up in writing rather than trying to call them. If you call; you will be asking for your service not to be cancelled. So cancel your web hosting account via written email.
These mofos reported me to the collection agency because my account didn't renew in time; not only that but it didn't renew, because my debit card was expired... so what do they do? report me and say that I don't pay my bills. They are like inept and stupid. How does that even work? I honestly don't have any ideas!
I recently purchased a VPS with 1and1 and am already thinking of quitting on them; the plan seems cumbersome and complicated. Its almost like you have to be a bloody network or server administrator to be able to understand WTF. They are stable, at a network level, if they didn't have that... they would be totally trashy.
Sometimes it really seems like these guys have no idea about what they are doing or even speaking about. Its like speaking with a crazy person, they just don't make any sense. Well, the same concept applies for 1&1; they don't know what they are doing. If your hosting doesn't crash and you won't need tech support EVER then they are an excellent web hosting provider... because they are as solid as a rock.
Having an account with 1&1 sometimes can be quite an annoying and problematic experience. However, there are times that the company shines; and others that is a huge pitfall. I'm honestly not sure what to mark them as, a good, bad, or mediocre.
1&1 when it comes to Windows hosting is rock solid. I've never had an issue where their web server was unavailable or there was a need to get in contact with their support. It just always worked like it should out of the box and that was it. Just worked, nothing else. In fact, I can say that the service speed up in the recent months, my website seems to load snappier.
You literally have to be a network administrator to be able to work with them, if your server has issues... you can be guaranteed you'll have to wait like 48 hours before the new server will be brought up and given to you. There is no backups, and SLA? well, their core network is always online, but... the server... if your the renter... good luck. Not really for anyone who doesn't know Linux really well and/or is a network administrator or a server administrator.
Seems they operate outsourced support, basically their support doesn't make any sense. They speak somewhat poor english and also they are very unprofessional, and frankly I dare say that they are very disrespectful. They make you repeat everything like 4 times before they finally understand everything. Oh well, another host that can't provide support, so what's new?
I recently bought a web hosting domain name with a shared hosting account with 1&1. Then I was like, ok, so how do I go about managing the WHOIS PRIVACY, and such... only to find out that its an extra fee... so I'm like ok, I don't need it... so Im like ok, let me work on the next best thing, and that's my website. Ok, so I start uploading files, but the issues is that I need some special permissions in the htaccess, but when I set them I get an internal server error 500. I contact support; they basically say, its not our problem, deal with it yourself???!?!?!?!? I shall not say more.
A total nightmare; Indian tech support, terrible customer service, and poor adaptive filters for email. Always getting flooded with some emails that makes no sense... and no real way to stem them. Stay away!!!!!!!!
