So here's what we think...

Whether you’re in the market for a shared web hosting account or your looking at moving your enterprise class hosting account elsewhere, 1&1 have a selection of services which you can utilize. 1&1’s product offering certainly packs a punch in both the performance, and their dedication to keeping pricing low, makes them an ideal option for many webmasters.

One thing that we at WebHostingToolBox really admire about 1&1 is their multi-homed approach, meaning that your website is physically hosted on two separate servers in different geographic areas, ensuring that no outages could affect the performance of your website.

Uptime & Reliability:

1&1 has both the budget and customer base to have a high performance and extremely reliable hosting network. They use cutting edge server infrastructure, make daily backups and protect your files without you even having to think about it. They also even offer “dual hosting” which allows your website to be hosted in two geographically disperse locations, providing you with better performance for your clients and in case of location failure.

While 1&1 doesn’t mention anything on their website about their uptime, their uptime is typically pegged at 99.999%, which is by far higher than most typical web hosting providers.

Features:

1&1 doesn’t need to impress their clients with “unlimited” features. Instead they reserve “unlimited” features for their business web hosting clients. You’ll find rather 1&1 find them providing you with dual-location hosting, high quality security features, and management tools. However, they will sweeten up the deal a little bit for you, they will give you some social marketing credits for starting promo campaigns for your projects.

Support:

1&1s customer service isn’t their forte. They seem to use outsourced support (where their support is based out of is currently unknown). While they aren’t known for being outstanding, you can get your problems resolved in a relatively timely manner. In some cases, it can be said that they lack live chat for their support, but they do provide 24/7 phone and email support, a community forum, and an extensive FAQ section.

Pros
  • 24/7 Phone & Email Support
  • Community Forum
  • Extensive KB (FAQ)
Cons
  • No Live Chat
  • Long ticket response times

User Friendly:

While 1&1 follows the trends that happen in the market place, they do so from a position of uniqueness. Everything that they offer on their web hosting service is custom, meaning that its scaled to fit your needs rather than something that’s available as an industry standard.

1&1 will provide you with a proprietary but very easy to use control panel (called 1&1 Control), a 1&1 Website Builder (very easy to use), and many other unique features. So rest assured, you’ll have the best in class user experience when you get setup with this web hosting provider.

Summary:

1&1 has a steady performance and reliability rating, they do offer a money back guarantee and the do offer services that allows your business to grow within 1&1. While their customer service is poor, they do make up for it with their extensive support resources and community forum.

I recently bought a web hosting domain name with a shared hosting account with 1&1. Then I was like, ok, so how do I go about managing the WHOIS PRIVACY, and such... only to find out that its an extra fee... so I'm like ok, I don't need it... so Im like ok, let me work on the next best thing, and that's my website. Ok, so I start uploading files, but the issues is that I need some special permissions in the htaccess, but when I set them I get an internal server error 500. I contact support; they basically say, its not our problem, deal with it yourself???!?!?!?!? I shall not say more.

I've had some of the shoddiest service and plenty but I mean plenty of problems. There was always some sorta problem with htaccess, then there was some problems with having shell access, then finally the service was just not accessible at all. I dont know what was wrong exactly, because every VPS should be working fine and instead its working like a piece of junk. Not really sure, but their customer service wasn't much better.

1&1 = bullshit. I recently became an admin of a couple of websites that are connected to this crappy provider. The support replies are useless and deficient; the service is decent, hard to admin, but decent. The email service is really great though; but apart from that blah. So its a mixed bag in a sense, they are cumbersome and complex, but they have excellent performance. Which is more important to you... you have to decide.

I opened a contract with 1and1 for a dedicated server; using a RAID array to protect my data on the server. So after I move all of the data and about 100 clients, the bloody server becomes completely unavailable; why? hard drive failure and there was no way to fix the issue.

intermittent outages lasting up to 10 mins is what I've experienced; when you have to deal with that kinda issues it really makes life hard to manage. However, I've been working and trying to find another web hosting provider; so as soon as this web hosting account comes due I'm out. That's my view point on the entire thing.

When it comes to working with control panels, its something that has to be spot on. However, in the case of 1&1 it really isn't, the interface is cumbersome and complicated to manage... certainly not their most shinning moment, that I can assure you of. Apart from that, their service is quite decent and works well. Support is another topic, but we'll leave that apart.

I would recommend switching your web hosting company and moving your domain name before your account comes up for renewal. If you don't you run the chance of them suspending your domain name, then you have to pay around $50 per domain to get it reactivated etc. Nothing very good; if you don't pay fast, you will be sent to a collection agency that they won't allow you to renew just your domain name.

I had to cancel my 1 year web hosting contract with 1&1 because of the problems with their uptime and their performance. Then they started to threaten me with all kinda emails and abuse... saying I owe them like £200 for cancelling and something else and something else... I don't even know what they wanted or want.

I choose 1&1 because they just work; there is nothing apart from performance. The uptime is fantastic the latency is low and the locations is excellent. Yes, maybe if you have to contact support its annoying but... apart from that... they really do work and as long as you don't lapse in anything they are rock solid with you.

I'm not a technical engineer, I never have been. In fact, i'm not an engineer at all; I'm just a person trying to run a blog and constantly met with frustration. My credit card bounced and after that, they suspended my account... that took only 4 months to resolve. I'm so tired of dealing with inept people.

A total nightmare; Indian tech support, terrible customer service, and poor adaptive filters for email. Always getting flooded with some emails that makes no sense... and no real way to stem them. Stay away!!!!!!!!

I recently purchased a VPS with 1and1 and am already thinking of quitting on them; the plan seems cumbersome and complicated. Its almost like you have to be a bloody network or server administrator to be able to understand WTF. They are stable, at a network level, if they didn't have that... they would be totally trashy.
