So here's what we think...
Whether you’re in the market for a shared web hosting account or your looking at moving your enterprise class hosting account elsewhere, 1&1 have a selection of services which you can utilize. 1&1’s product offering certainly packs a punch in both the performance, and their dedication to keeping pricing low, makes them an ideal option for many webmasters.
One thing that we at WebHostingToolBox really admire about 1&1 is their multi-homed approach, meaning that your website is physically hosted on two separate servers in different geographic areas, ensuring that no outages could affect the performance of your website.
Uptime & Reliability:
1&1 has both the budget and customer base to have a high performance and extremely reliable hosting network. They use cutting edge server infrastructure, make daily backups and protect your files without you even having to think about it. They also even offer “dual hosting” which allows your website to be hosted in two geographically disperse locations, providing you with better performance for your clients and in case of location failure.
While 1&1 doesn’t mention anything on their website about their uptime, their uptime is typically pegged at 99.999%, which is by far higher than most typical web hosting providers.
Features:
1&1 doesn’t need to impress their clients with “unlimited” features. Instead they reserve “unlimited” features for their business web hosting clients. You’ll find rather 1&1 find them providing you with dual-location hosting, high quality security features, and management tools. However, they will sweeten up the deal a little bit for you, they will give you some social marketing credits for starting promo campaigns for your projects.
Support:
1&1s customer service isn’t their forte. They seem to use outsourced support (where their support is based out of is currently unknown). While they aren’t known for being outstanding, you can get your problems resolved in a relatively timely manner. In some cases, it can be said that they lack live chat for their support, but they do provide 24/7 phone and email support, a community forum, and an extensive FAQ section.
- 24/7 Phone & Email Support
- Community Forum
- Extensive KB (FAQ)
- No Live Chat

User Friendly:
While 1&1 follows the trends that happen in the market place, they do so from a position of uniqueness. Everything that they offer on their web hosting service is custom, meaning that its scaled to fit your needs rather than something that’s available as an industry standard.
1&1 will provide you with a proprietary but very easy to use control panel (called 1&1 Control), a 1&1 Website Builder (very easy to use), and many other unique features. So rest assured, you’ll have the best in class user experience when you get setup with this web hosting provider.

So what do other Webmasters think?
I've been a customer of 1and1 for years, most of the time, I've had nothing but a positive support response... while I normally don't need customer service, as I know what Im doing... I needed them this one time.
It seems like 1and1 is built on charging people for stuff they don't provide. You know? Its weird, but it seems true. They put my account into collections, yet I didn't do anything and I paid my invoice 24 hours late. So I don't really know what to think about this company? between their support... and their bloody inability to provide it and bad customer service... I'd think twice before moving to them!
Their customer service is super unhelpful; they seem not to be able to fix the most basic of issues such as uptime and email uptime... it seems like their mail server keeps crashing or something else is happening, as the email keeps getting stuck. When you call them up, they seem to grasp the issue, but they don't do anything to fix it.. which is quite frustrating itself, since thats one of the most important things to me... getting through to customer service and getting the issues solved.
A total nightmare; Indian tech support, terrible customer service, and poor adaptive filters for email. Always getting flooded with some emails that makes no sense... and no real way to stem them. Stay away!!!!!!!!
Horrible company; my domain name was suspended, because their system for some reason didn't renew my domain name. I'm not sure why? Anyways, after calling and giving them the credit card number, they said they would process it and get it back online.... after two hours, nothing. Called back again, I was told that I'd have to pay another $50.00 to get the domain name re-instated... ok, so I agreed... still nothing. Am searching for another web hosting provider at the moment.
I got charged like $240.00 for 8 months of hosting, with them they added like two or three different programs that I didn't request, so that's how they jacked up the price to that price. 1and1 is suppose to be a low cost provider, instead they are worst cost provider... and they are really expensive to boot! Really not a provider for my pocket fortunately or unfortunately as the case maybe...
I'm not a technical engineer, I never have been. In fact, i'm not an engineer at all; I'm just a person trying to run a blog and constantly met with frustration. My credit card bounced and after that, they suspended my account... that took only 4 months to resolve. I'm so tired of dealing with inept people.
I would say that they are a well rounded and quite solid company. Any customer service requests that I make end up getting solved... maybe not instantly, but they do get solved. Im sorta glad with their service even though that everyone else wants to kick and knock it around a bit. I think they are worth the while.
I have more than 15 years of web development experience and have never had a web hosting company that just doesn't care as much as 1and1. I know that they are owned by the German Government and that it doesn't matter to them, but still... why offer a service if you can't even provide basic support for it?! I just don't get it?!
I hate it. It's slow, the interface sucks and difficult to use. The site takes longer to refresh than it would on my computer at home. I don't know what's going on with them... endless problems. In fact, I'm planning on moving my website right now.
They don't seem to operate a ticketing system, so you can't get an ID for your inquiry, which makes life a little complicated. I don't know how to cancel my contract... and even if I did... I wouldn't know what the next steps are in moving forward with them.
Anyways; Im seriously considering moving from them, because they are just impossible to deal with. They are complicated and cumbersome.
I would give them more stars if they actually fixed my problem. However, I will say that their support did help me and got the SSL loaded, and got the SSL certificate up and running. I only had to wait like 3 days to get it done but I did get it done.
